Fuel Consumption Formula
Every result on this page traces back to one relationship: how much fuel a distance actually consumes, and what that fuel costs at today’s price. In metric terms, litres consumed equals your car’s L/100km rating multiplied by the distance in kilometres, then divided by 100, with the final cost equal to that litre figure multiplied by your local price per litre. Working in MPG flips the arithmetic slightly, since gallons consumed equals distance divided by MPG, but the logic underneath stays identical.
MPG Formula
Take a car rated at 32 MPG covering 210 miles. Divide 210 by 32, and you get 6.56 gallons burned, which at $3.95 a gallon comes to $25.91 for the drive, or about $0.123 per mile.
L/100km Formula
Take a car rated at 8.5 L/100km over 500 km. Multiplying 8.5 by 500 and dividing by 100 gives 42.5 litres used, and at $1.75 a litre that comes to $74.38 total, or roughly $0.149 per kilometre.
km/L Formula
Drivers across most of Asia think in km per litre rather than litres per 100km. At 12 km/L over 400 km, dividing 400 by 12 gives 33.33 litres burned for the journey, and our km/L calculator runs this exact formula directly if it’s the unit you use daily.

What Is Good Fuel Consumption
A fuel consumption rate below 7.0 L/100km, above 33 MPG in US terms, counts as good for a standard petrol car in 2026. Below 6.0 L/100km, above 39 MPG, is excellent.
Petrol: 6.5 to 8.5 L/100km (28 to 36 MPG) is typical for a mid-size sedan. Diesel: 5.0 to 7.0 L/100km (34 to 47 MPG), usually 0.5 to 1.5 L/100km lower than the petrol equivalent.
Hybrid: 4.0 to 5.5 L/100km (43 to 59 MPG) for a standard hybrid sedan. SUV: 7.5 to 10.0 L/100km (23 to 31 MPG) for a compact SUV.
Truck: 11.0 to 17.0 L/100km (14 to 21 MPG) for a full-size pickup or truck.

Common Fuel Calculation Mistakes
Using the wrong MPG figure. Manufacturer ratings run 10 to 20 percent higher than real-world driving, so real-world estimates give a more honest number.
